Whether working with an online printer or a local, wedding invitation designer, there are an array of invitation types to choose from – where do you start?!?
So we sat down with MIPB Family Member Chirp Paperie to by discuss the different options, pricing, and to see beautiful examples of each of the invitation types. We also discussed what else to remember when it comes to invites.

Digital – $5.00
We love digital invitations because they look great and are cost effective. These are best for those couples looking to utilize watercolor or other multicolored designs.
- Includes: Invitation, RSVP, Matching Envelopes, Envelope Liner
- Description: Flat printing on heavy weight cardstock.
- Printing Process: Traditional printing process.
- Other Details: Printing can be done in any color and any color combination.
Thermography – $8.50
If you are looking for a touch of elegance without breaking the bank, thermography is a great option for you.
- Includes: Invitation, RSVP, Matching Envelopes, Envelope Liner
- Description: Slightly raised ink printed on cardstock.
- Printing Process: Powder is applied to the laser ink and run through a heater. When the powder is heated, it expands and gives a raised lettering feel.
- Other Details: Can only be applied to one color. Not a printing option for those with multicolored designs.
Foil – $10.50+
Adding foil printing to your invitation makes for a fun and unique touch that your guests will be sure to love.
- Includes: Invitation, RSVP, Matching Envelopes, Envelope Liner
- Description: Cardstock with metallic foil paper on specific areas.
- Printing Process: Metallic foil paper is heated and pressed onto cardstock using a plate. A new plate is needed for each color used.
- Other Details: Can be used in combination with digital printing.
Letterpress – $12.00+
The most traditional and gorgeous style of invitation! We love the timelessness of a letterpress invitation.
- Includes: Invitation, RSVP, Matching Envelopes, Envelope Liner
- Description: Pressed, thick 100% cotton paper.
- Printing Process: Plate is created from your invitation design, ink is rolled on the plate, and then pressed into the paper. This leaves an imprint on the paper. Requires a new plate for every color used.
- Other Details: Can be used in combination with foil or digital printing. There is a separate cost for the plate and the printing. Typically, there are required minimums of 100-150 invitations that need to be ordered with this style.
DIE Cut Invitations – $12.00+
We love the uniqueness of this printing style! The options are limitless since you can create any shape, any size. Let your imagination run wild.
- Includes: Invitation, RSVP, Matching Envelopes, Envelope Liner
- Description: Cardstock cut to a specified invitation.
- Printing Process: A “DIE” is created which is a blade contoured into the shape desired and mounted onto wood. The die is then pressed against the paper to “cut out” the desired shape. There is a separate cost for the die and the process of cutting, and an additional cost for the printing done prior.
- Other Details: Can be used by itself but usually used in combination with any of the above style of printing. Typically, there are required minimums of 100-150 invitations that need to be ordered with this style.
Boxed Invitations – Variable
We love this invitation type because it feels like you are opening a present…then SURPRISE you are invited to a wedding!
- Includes: Invitation, RSVP, RSVP Envelope, Box
- Description: Box exterior combined with fun accent pieces for the invitation.
- Printing Process: The box exterior can be paired with any invitation print type as the box itself is not printed upon.
- Other Details: Pricing is determined after the initial meeting based on your specific needs. Shipping is much higher on boxed invitations.
Envelope addressing styles – Variable
There are a few options when it comes to addressing your envelopes. Each can be easily paired with any of the invitations types listed above.
Custom Labels – $25 for 50 addresses
- Custom sticker label that is adhered to the envelope.
- Designed to match the invitation perfectly. So many fun styles out there! Enjoy the creativity.
Guest Address printing – $25 for 50 envelopes
- Addresses are printed directly on the envelope itself.
- Can select from a variety of fonts.
Return Address printing – $40 for up to 150 envelopes
- Addresses are printed directly on the envelope itself.
- Can select from a variety of fonts.
Hand Lettering – $1.00+
- Addresses are transferred to envelopes by hand.
- Font types are limited to what the artist can hand draw.
- Pricing is variable from artist to artist, so make sure to inquire directly with the artist you like.
Calligraphy – $1.50-$3.75
- Addresses are calligraphied to envelopes by hand.
- Pricing is variable from artist to artist, so make sure to inquire directly with the artist you like.
- There is typically an upcharge for colored ink.
Additional Details – Variable
There are other details you can add to your invitation suite.
- $0.50 for belly bands, twine, ribbons, stickers, etc.
- $0.50 for additional info cards in digital printing, like website, hotel, registry, etc. Price can increase if you print another print type.
Stamps and Shipping
Always, always, always take a sample of your invitation to USPS to confirm the weight and sizing! This way you can make sure to purchase the correct postage. As you can see from the list below, there are many things that can increase your needed postage.
- $0.49 for standard 1 oz. forever stamp.
- Upcharge for invitations larger than 1 oz and/or 5″x7″.
- Upcharge for invitations that don’t lay flat (wax seal, ribbon inside, etc.).
- Upcharge for square invitations.
- Upcharge for invitations that are rigid and unbendable (thick paper will hinder flexibility).
- $1.00+ for boxed invitations.

The pricing listed does not include Chirp Paperie’s design fee of $200 for the creation and production of the invitations. It also does not include shipping to the client, which is typically $25 for 2-3 day priority with tracking and insurance.
